The Social Media Wars

Here we go. Google, MySpace, and Facebook have all thrown their gauntlets into what is shaping up to be the Social Media wars. They all claim their data portability plans will bring on the next generation of social networking online. I don’t see it that optimistically.

Truly next generation social networking will turn the current concept inside out. Using standard tools and formats the network of the future will be be the glue that holds all your social web services together. It’ll be invisible, but crucial to synchronizing your social footprint with as little effort as possible. For example; why do I have facebook mail, when I’d much rather have IMAP access to my Gmail account from within Facebook.

With a little planning and know how, I’ve been able to integrate my web services so that there’s some automated synchronization happening. Twitter tweets appear on my blog and become my Facebook status. Blog posts get auto tweeted and added to my Facebook mini-feed. There’s more I can do, but zero-effort, agnostic social media synchronization is the future.
